Abstract
[eng] Abstract M. de la Galissonnière (1693-1756) is one of the few navy officers who won a victory during the Seven Years War (1756-1763). He was descended from a family of lawyers established in Brittany and in Paris and was the son of a squadron admiral. Early in the war he won the battle of Port-Mahon, a victory which enabled the Duke of Richelieu - his cousin — to control Minorca. Minorca had been ruled by the English since 1713 and went back to England in 1763. The excellent sauce served on board La Galissonnière' s ship the very night when Mahon was conquered becam known as « mahonnaise » and is now famous as « mayonnaise ». A ship in the French navy is still today named after La Galissonnière. He was also the grandson of Michel Bégon, a famous « intendant » in Rochefort, whose name is at the origin of the thousand species of begonias existing nowadays. So La Galissonnière has also somehow contributed to the development of the French language.
