Abstract

[eng] Abstract The end of the reign of Louis XIV has been marked in the military field by a tactical seizing up which turned the last conflict of the reign into an exhausting « war of attrition ». The peaceful beginning of the reign of Louis XV has enabled the war theorists to recast completly the tactics in order to solve the problems the army met. This is the reason why they backed up their ideas on frequent references to ancient latin and greek authors. Stimulated by these readings, their reflection went beyond the battle field to redefine the role of the army.
