Abstract

[eng] Abstract A product of the French Ecole Polytechnique, Alexandre Lavalley stands out as an exemplar of the innovating entrepreneur. Through his collaboration with Ernest Gotiin, founder of Société de Construction des Batignolles, Lavalley 's contribution was decisive, in introducing British technologies in France. After leaving the Goüin firm, he was to become the major contractor of the Suez canal construction site. There he made use novel dredging techniques, operating new equipment with outstandingly powerful machinery by then current standards. Subsequently, he was to become involved in the Channel Tunnel project, before directing construction of a deep-water harbour in La Réunion, and later still successfully engaging in politics.
