Abstract

[eng] Abstract These comments treat both the nature of the working class quarter in Paris in the late nineteenth century and the way in which to study it. Should one accept the pre-established limits set by the choice of a specific quarter or concentrate on the study of the « local » which ways are really heavy, yet boundaries fluctuate enormously. The « village » of which the former inhabitants speak, implies a strong mutual knowledge, a certain common way of life, and an undeniable solidarity. Nevertheless, privacy did exist and was well respected, internal divisions and arguments were an intimate part of social life, and individuals were presented with possibilities from outside the quarter.
