Abstract

[eng] Abstract French farmers played an important part in the construction of Europe. Faithful to the European ideal, they supported the French government whenever the policies they followed respected their conviction, even though their direct interests were partly sacrified. On the whole, they favoured the admission of the United Kingdom to the European Community and therefore were opposed, on several occasions, to the policy which General de Gaulle followed. Later on, despite the difficulties between the two countries in their trade relations, french farmers never contested Britain's entry, because the agricultural interests of both countries are more and more convergent.
