Abstract

[eng] Abstract The colloquium on the 5th centenary of the Americas' discovery by Colombus, which opened with this paper, had to be wary of anachronism, which would have erased the realistics of 1492 and substitute the consequences of this event to the gennine problems which are raised by such a symbolic year. The first question-marks deal with the relation ships between the knowledge which existed at the time and the innovatory imagination of late 15th century navigators. However, prestige and power are also related to material wealth : imagination is gilt with the gold of Cipangu. And the part of our Lord, which is crucial in a world of believers and crusaders, is not neglected.
