Abstract

[eng] Abstract This succint essay points out that inquisitorial records of Spain concern not only Castilian, Catalan or Basque people but European people of all extractions and countries. It's the case of the trials which concern the protestant people, especially sailors, fishermen and trademen. J-E. Longhurst already proved this reality in a paper of 1967 in connection with the Basque country. The present paper is relative to protestant sailors, especially English, Flemish, Dutch, sometimes German or French people, who return to the Christendom after a long way round the mohammedan world. Two conjunctures are possible : the first is a voluntary come back and a spontaneous presentation before the Holy Office but with a single purpose : to obtain a safe-conduct an to return to their country. The second is a compelled come-back after capture in cruising : in this last circunstance the protestant sailors are speaking much more, relate in detail their religious education and accept catholic initiation.
