Abstract

[eng] Abstract In the United States today, there are over fifty active, female religious congregations derived from a French diocese dating back to the time of Maria de Medici ; they number some 10 000 nums. The geographical breakdown and social importance of their work in America from 1 727 to are examined as indicators of a on-going French spiritual influence. The geographical distribution of present-day communities corresponds to a great extent to that the 23 dioceses held by 40 French prelates from 1810 to 1917. Within this geographical zone, and the context of multicultural immigration from 1820 to 1920, the educational references provided by the nuns have had a more lasting effect on behaviour than the - now diminished - speaking of French.
