Abstract

[eng] Abstract Since the writings of Sieyès in 1788-1789, many historians and nearly all the authors of school-books have claimed that the first two orders of French society in the Ancien Regime, the clergy and the nobility, were the only privileged ones, to the exclusion of the Tiers État. In fact, all the French were privileged before 1789. The task of desinformation carried on by Sieyès has been utterly successful. It paved the way to the Terror, before it durably warped the minds of the XlXth and XXth centuries.
