Abstract

[eng] Abstract The article annalyses a part of the social mentalities of the Ancient Regime. The sources are 500 wills. The concept of mentality supposes several elements composed in layers - the socioeconomic, the political and the religious factor - changing at different rhythms. The motivation to give and the tendency to prefer closer persons to distant persons are 'longue durée'-features ; a shorttime variation is for example the substitution of donations to the church by those to the poor. Other factors like the social stratification change slowly the signification of the mutual gift to an ostentatious donation. Politics are important only during the short period between 1525 and 1550. The interrelation of the factors is strong and shows complex interactions at different points of time. This limits the possibility to define more precisely the effects of the religious factor.
