Abstract

[eng] Abstract : At the beginning of the 1850s, railways had to attract a portion of the inland traffic This paper examines the main phases of the competition between the river boatmen and the large companies. In a general sense, this competition led to lower costs for the transport of heavy goods on the busiest lines, but, from the end of the nineteenth century, it declined and the role of waterways during periods of economic crisis changed. Before the 1907/1 908s, every difficulty produced a reduction in freight rates and a growth of river traffic; after this date, railways were able to offer lower tariffs and to attract a portion of the business. The role of the waterway industry could have been greater if the Freycinet plan did not had been partially applied and if more rational measures had been taken to improve the exploitation of the canals.
