Abstract

[eng] Abstract : Before the arrival of European missionaries, religious pictures were quite rare in the Near East. Christians often went through their rituals without using them. The fact that Muslims disliked these pictures is often mentioned, although it was not systematically the case. Religious men of Latin origin showed little interest for the paintings kept by the Levantine Christians and misunderstood the artistic quality of icons. That's the reason why they were not led to adapt their pictures to the local mental framework. Hence they imported western works of art or had them made on the spot, using them according to ways which had been tested in Europe. Eastern people adopted these new ways with great enthusiasm. Their new taste brought about a second birth of Near-eastern painting whose western and post-byzantine roots allowed о kind of synthesis with original features.
