Abstract

[eng] Abstract : A fundamental mainstay of military power for any State in modern times, up to the revolutionary era, the upkeep of a standing navy bore down massively on the country's economic resources and its industrial infrastructure. For the purposes of evaluating the importance of this military element, and the related requirements in materials, manpower, and funding, an index has been compiled, of the men-of-war and frigates that constituted the French Navy, from 1660 to 1815. This article first considers the ship, as the basic unit of index data, going on to such topics as data gathering and choice of computing techniques, then outlining the approach adhered to, and the benefits accruing from such a methodology.
