Abstract

[fre] Résumé : Entre 1840 et 1939, les entreprises françaises de travaux publics se situèrent à la pointe de l'innovation mondiale. Afin de répondre, en France, aux besoins d'une clientèle exigeante - Ponts et chaussées, compagnies ferroviaires, ou sociétés d'électricité - tout en économisant une main d'œuvre de plus en plus coûteuse, elles s'appliquèrent à mettre au point des matériaux nouveaux ainsi qu'à réaliser des ouvrages de haute qualité au plus bas prix de revient. Elles préservèrent ainsi, tout au long de la période, un haut niveau de compétitivité internationale. [eng] Abstract : In the years from 1840 to 1939, French civil enginnering contractors stood as world leaders for innovation. To meet the demand, on the French market, of customers with exacting requirements - the Roads and bridges department (Administration des Ponts et chaussées), railway companies, or electricity firms - whilst saving on everrising labour costs, they strove to develop new materials, and to achieve high quality construction at the lowest cost. They were thus able to sustain, throughout this period, their highly competitive position on the international markets.
