Abstract

[eng] Abstract : The sedulous minister of France's absolute monarch par excellence, Colbert has nonetheless been held up as an example by French historiography, ever since the Third Republic. Whilst his industrial policy may have ended in relative failure, and whereas his name may still be castigated, drawing, to this day, criticism verging on vilification, the figure of Colbert yet stands, in the French mind, for «France's awakening to the modern economy, at Government level» (Edgar Faure). That his industrial policy should make such a permanent mark was due to its ushering in of an industrialist tradition, with the emergence of a mood of thought whereby the realm of commodity manufacture should not be considered apart from that of the production of knowledge, or the quality of goods apart from their aesthetic value, to achieve the goal of maximum employment for a large population.
