Abstract

[eng] Abstract The study of women's widowhood in XVII-XVIIIe centuries France, though left aside by historiography, appears to be a good means to evaluate the abilities of a community to raise, or at least to cut down the mortgages which hang on its most fragile members, as well as to investigate where precisely this fragility lies and why it is specific. The investigation must focus on the images issued from debates of various origins (religious, literary,...) as well as on facts which emerge from different kinds of sources. The few directions which are here suggested might lead to an answer.
