Abstract

[eng] Abstract In the urban history of modern Germany decline is no rare development concerning more than half of the cities of more than 10 000 inhabitants in 1600. Nevertheless, the demographic decline corresponds with different realities as shown by opposing the demographic indicator and a panel of quantified indicators of cultural vitality. Analysing three particular cases (Durlach, Aachen, Augsburg) then allows the opposition of two types of cities : these paying for the maintenance of their niveau of population by accelerated economic and social decline with those who take the chances offered by the demographic decline for an economic restructuring while increasing quality.
