Abstract

[eng] Abstract A comparative study of the major themes of Jesuit preaching reveals the era's preoccupations with religions education as well as a social project with both traditionnel and innovative aspects. Faithful to the Roman Catholic tradition, the preachers of the Society of Jesus succeeded in preserving the theological and spiritual contents of their message while endeavouring to define the role of the Christian in a drastically changing world. The Fathers ceaselessly pleaded in favour of Man and rejected too strict forms of piety. As relentless adversaries of the « New Ideas » they refused the philosophical debate which was then being launched, thus underestimating its full significance.
