Abstract

[eng] Abstract Over a century following the discovery of the New World, Europe gradually developed a vision of it that was in many ways a stereotype. Travellers' jour- nab fostered a new mythology, in which three trends stand out : First, a quest for the fantastic and the impossible myths of the Old World, as Amazons and Giants. Second, an ambiguous and ambivalent assessment of a new aspect of mankind, made up of good savages as well as frightening cannibals. Third, the transfer of European political and religious conflicts to America, where new evidence is found to support the anti-Spanish « Black Legend ».
