Abstract

[eng] Abstract The price of bread on July 1789 was exceptionally high. The consequences of this phenomena have been often stressed but its causes remain debatable. Econometric tests of long-term models show that the price of wheat on the Pontoise market at Eastern and on June 24, 1789 are indeed unexplaina- ble by past data reflecting mainly fluctuating climatic conditions. However, the same models « explain » the price of wheat on November 11, 1788. One possible interpretation of these findings is that neither the bad weather of the summer of 1788, often put forward, nor Necker administrative measures are sufficient explanations of the rise of the price of wheat in July 1789.
