Abstract

[eng] This paper is based on a diary written en 1836 by André de Neuflize, the last of a family of clothiers settled in Sedan since the beginning of the 17th Century. It shows that the French Revolution did not forbid the sons of the Old Regime industrialists to pursue their fathers' enterprises. The proto-industrial system of production, that the Sedan region had been experiencing for a century, had sufficient flexibility to allow their heirs to revive quickly the cloth manufacture as soon as 1795. The necessary credit needed to buy wool and for other investments was easily granted to manufacturers with their lands as a garantee, before and after 1789. When the mechanization mania took possession, after 1815, of the last born to the old generations of clothiers, they had to resort to banks for credit, and therefore to risk the fortunes of trade and politics. André de Neuflize thus vanished with his possessions, together with Guillaume Ternaux, in the 1826-32 crisis ; but the new management of industrial areas which these two bankrupt pioneers had achieved remained till the 20 th Century.
