Abstract

[fre] Aussi loin que l'on remonte dans l'histoire, la figure de l'indigent, du vagabond, du clochard, du sans-abri ou du sans-domicile a toujours suscité des réactions ambiguës de fascination et de rejet. Bien des facteurs y contribuent : le caractère « spectaculaire » de la vie dans la rue, « miroir de nos peurs et de nos solidarités » (Roulleau- Berger, 2004), les sentiments de compassion mêlée de culpabilité, l'attraction et la crainte, voire le dégoût devant des situations extrêmes de souffrance et de déshumanisation (1). Nombreuses sont les oeuvres littéraires (Jack London, 1902 ; Georges Orwell, 1931), les enquêtes qualitatives, les recherches ' à caractère essentiellement anthropologiques ou sociologiques (Georg Simmel, 1908 ; Alexandre Vexliard, 1957) ' qui ont analysé dans le passé la typologie et les parcours des marginaux sans pour autant avoir réussi à infl échir les représentations collectives profondément ancrées dans l'inconscient collectif.
