Abstract

[eng] The Number of People Working in Farming should Continue to Drop . In 1990, one employed person in seventeen worked in farming. In 1954, the ratio was one in four. From 1982 to 1 990, the number of people working in farming dropped by nearly half a million. Only large operations were spared this decrease. Today the percentage of people working in agriculture in France is close to that of its industrialized partners. . The working farm population, which is mostly male, remains old. It has become slightlyyoungeroverthe last fewyears, but this will not last : the farmers who retire increasingly earlier are being replaced by younger ones too slowly. If the trends which were noted between the last two censuses do not go down, there would only be 700 000 farmers left in 1998.
