Abstract

[eng] The Foreign Trade of E.C. Countries The Effects of Moving Toward a Single Market . On the eve of the Single Market and Economic and Monetary Union, adistinction should be madebetweenthe trade among E.C. countries and their trade with the rest of the world. . During the eighties, the overall performance of the Twelve in relation to the rest of the world deteriorated, due to the loss of comparative advantages in fields that were traditionally strong, and, at the end of that période, to a drop in the German surplus. . The reality of the Single Market can already be felt in the intensifying trade between the member countries : it seems to be linked to the strengthening of specialization and the complementary nature of large European economies. The specialization of France remains less developed : its commercial performance remains better with the rest of the world than with its partners in the Community because it has more difficulties in developing strong points in intra-Euro- pean trade.
