Abstract

[eng] Inflation: France is Now Doing Better than Germany - In June 1991 , the French yearly inflation rate became lower than that of Germany for the first time since mid-1973. Each of the main components of the German retail price index is now rising faster than its equivalent in France, with the noticeable exception of the price of private services. . Until the mid-eighties, Germany profited by the convergence of a more favourable trend for wage costs, a lower dependence on energy and a stronger currency. Since then, these three factors have turned to France's advantage: this country has considerably cut its wage costs, pursued its program for energetic self-sufficiency, and strengthened its position within the European Monetary System. Added to these factors are the recent difficulties of Germany which is subjected to the effects of unification and especially the heavier burden of in direct taxes.
