Abstract

[eng] There are now Twice as Many Homes as a Century Ago - The first 1990 census results complete the analysis of all dwellings listed in the 1988 survey on housing. In general, they confirm the trends revealed in that survey: there is a continuing movement to the periphery of cities and, at the same time, households are becoming smaller. Recent years are characterized by a spectacular increase in dwellings other than those which are the main place of residence: that is, essentially secondary residences, including occasional homes which are frequently used as a "pied-à-terre" in a big city. . Various censuses make it possible to follow the evolution of dwellings over the last century. Thus, since the end of the Second World War, the number of primary places of residence has kept increasing, and, as a counterpart, the number of occupants has tended to decrease. . The few differences found between the survey on housing and the census can also be explained by the increase in quality of the 1990 census as well as by a relative unde- revaluation of new construction in the survey on housing.
