Abstract

[eng] Interest Rates, Financing and Firms' Performance -The structure of the financing of firms has changed over the last twenty years: indebtedness increased in relation to share capital in the seventies, but the trend has reversed itself in the last ten years. This financing structure can be related to Tobin's "q" ratio which measures the market value of a firm holding a unit of capital stock: the market value of firms does not seem to be independant from the way they divide their liabilities into indebtedness and share capital. Indebted firms are less appreciated by the markets. . The improvement of productivity and the easing of the constraints of indebtedness contribute greatly to explaining the dynamism of industrial investment since the mid eighties, well above and beyond the upswing of predicted demand. However, to hold in check their indebtedness rate when there are high real interest rates, firms can be led to limit their investment or to resort to price increases. The continuation of such levels in France is undoudtedly a handicap, but the harmonization of rates in Europe is likely to have different effects on the French and West German balance of trade. The capacity of capital flows to produce a supply which compensate for these effects depends on the dynamism and efficiency of the investment programs within a single European Market.
