Abstract

[eng] Services, Stores and Equipment. A Typical Portrait of French Townships - The inventory of French townships records the presence or absence of more than two hundred categories of equipment. The existence and the survival of a township's equipment depend mainly on the number of its inhabitants. Nearly half of the French townships have a grocery store, whereas only 16% of them have a bank. Whenever the size of the towship makes it possible, equipment becomes more varied. This is the case for equipment which is essential to daily Jife. The village has its primary school, the small town its food stores and its doctor, and the large cities have everything. . County-towns are privileged and are better equipped than other towns of the same size, particularly as for as public services are concerned. The proximity of a hub-city is unfavorable to suburban townships. For the same population, a hub-city is always better equipped than the suburbs of a larger city in the countryside, being far way from cities is usually, but by no means always, an advantage. Even considering the diversity of their townships, the standard of equipment of French departments remains uneven: good equipment may sometimes be only a compensation for the township's relative isolation.
