Abstract

[eng] A portrait of Self-employed Workers - At the beginning of 1988, the number of self-employed workers- not including farmers - was estimated to be 1,420,000 according to the SIRENE index list. Their average age was 43 and they were mostly men (there were seven men for three women). They tended to remain in their native region, except for those who were born in the Paris area and who moved to other districts in larger numbers. On the average, there was one salaried worker for each individual firm, but in fact only four self-employed workers out of ten were employers. Their share in the non-agricultural productive infrastructure was low in terms of the number of salaried workers (12%), but very high in terms of the number of firms (64%). [fre] Un portrait des travailleurs indépendants . Georges Bigata .
