Abstract

[eng] Farmers non-agricultural income choice or necessity - According to a study intended to examine income from farming entreprises, in 1979 almost a quarter of these farming entreprises led to no profit in the fiscal sense. All together, this kind of entreprises represented only 5 % of the area used and the same proportion of the overall agricultural activity (measured by the « standard gross margin »). The absence of fiscal agricultural income is, thus, the sign of limited activity and of income that is itself limited. It is not surprising that 86 % of farmers in this situation receive income of another nature, salary, pensions, and non-agricultural income. Other farmers also receive non-agricultural income. There was a total of about 500,000 (42 %) of such workers in 1979. The low return on their entreprises was only one element among others to explain this numerous group. But, above all in the case of a salaried activity, it is most often the income involved which seems to determine the level of farm work rather than the reverse.
