Abstract

[eng] Agriculture: the emergence of new behavior - A smaller and smaller proportion of women is engaged in the occupation of farmer. For men, on the contrary, this proportion seems to be stabilizing. On the whole, farmers are relatively old and often still continue to carry out their activity after the age of 60. The behavior of men in farming has changed a lot since the end of the 1960's: the number of men going into farming has decreased a bit. But they enter the occupation later in their lives and are more stable. Thus, for the generations just after the war, the number of beginners was great up to age 20, but was followed by a large proportion of defections. For the following generations, on the contrary, the entries, though less numerous, were not followed by defections. All of a sudden, in 1982, the portion of farmers among the active population was almost the same for all the post-war generations (about 3.5 %). Will this stabilisation be durable! It is still too early to say.
