Abstract

[eng] Craftsmen in Languedoc-Roussillon Today - Languedoc-Roussillon is a region in which craftsmen occupy an important place, both in terms of the number of firms and in the number working in the sector. The 35,000 businesses counted is 1980 are often relatively new; and the sector's working population of 80,000 is fairly unstable. However, beyond these figures for Languedoc-Roussillon alone, the article shows the key role played by managers as well as making clear the various ways in which a business develops, and this information is valid for France as a whole. The manager is most often solely responsible for the operating and management of his firm. He generally received his training on the job, usually in a small firm. He is normally the creator of his own business, which will disappear with him. The competition is severe, although it is generally restricted to a limited geographical area. Faced with this competition, he must adapt, but rather than trying to merge with other firms he prefers to develop secondary activities or to improve the services he provides, without, however, losing his specificity, that is, his privileged contact with his clients.
