Abstract

[eng] Based on a synthesis of the data available on the employment of young people — data on job training, the results of statistics on first job hiring — the authors have attempted to show how the conditions of finding work differ for young men and women. Firstly, the educational system seems to function in a way which is favorable to young women. They more frequently leave school with a diploma than do young men and they are in the majority (and increasingly so) in receiving the Baccalauréat and higher degrees. Next, the division of labour in terms of sex shows little change at the moment of hiring : the men are generally hired as workers in the industrial sector while women are generally hired as office employees and in the tertiary sector. Paradoxically, given their high level of unemployment, trends on the labor market appear to be favorable to young women looking for work. The growth and high turnover of the tertiary sector have allowed women to have direct access to skilled work to a greater extent than young men. However, overqualification at hiring and the gap between the diploma held and the level of job actually taken is even more prevalent for young women. Although women have a higher level of training, the work market seems to be more demanding towards them. If they have no diploma, their unemployment level is higher than for young men, and, overall, they must have higher diplomas if they are to obtain an equivalent job. Lastly, it should be pointed out that the training or education received plays a different role within the two populations.
