Abstract

[eng] The Results of the Latest Employment Survey : Unemployment in October, 1980 - The number of unemployed (according to the definition of the International Labor Organization) was 1,600,000 in October, 1980, which represents an increase of 5.7 % as compared with October, 1979. Such a relatively low rate of increase does not seem to correspond to the progressive deterioration of the employment situation. Two hypotheses, which are not mutually exclusive, can possibly explain this phenomenon. First, there is the effect of changes in the conditions of the payment of benefits to the unemployed registered with the Agence Nationale pour l'Emploi; second, there is the current economic situation, which no doubt caused a certain number of individuals to withdraw from the job market. The decrease in the percentage of long-term unemployed confirms the first hypothesis, while the decline in women's unemployment bears out the second.
