Abstract

[eng] The survey on work schedules of 1974-1975 took a census of the various forms of household help in the households of city dwellers, whether it was a cleaning woman, a relative, neighbor, or friend, a social assistant, or a full-time maid. Only 11.5 % of urban households have some form of household help (7.1 % have a cleaning woman). Household help primarily concerns the two extremes of the social scale, but in a totally different fashion. Assistance by charitable or government organizations is provided chiefly to individuals living alone, either elderly, disabled, or economically handicapped. All things considered, relatively few households in these categories receive help, and with relatively few hours weekly. On the other hand, paid help is almost exclusively within the families of industrialists or of top-level executives with large salaries. Within these categories, a large proportion employ household help, and with relatively numerous hours. One is tempted to conclude that; in order to benefit from household help, one must be either extremely handicapped or extremely privileged.
