Abstract

[eng] Corsica in Transformation -The early sixties were a turning point in the evolution of Corsica. The population, which had fallen by 40 % since the beginning of the century, began to make a spectacular comeback. This favorable « accident » was due to deliberate action stemming from the policies of the national development plan, begun in 1957 and aimed at encouraging tourism and agriculture in the island. At the same time, Corsica received a sizeable influx of refugees from Algeria. The introduction of modern agricultural techniques (although the orientation of agriculture did not ultimately follow the initial plans) and the development of tourism has created during the last two decades 30,000 additional jobs which are primarily held by the new immigrant population, but also by women, who tend to take jobs at a rapidly growing rate. Although a certain number of indicators show that the average standard of living of Corsicans is unquestionably catching up with that of mainland Frenchmen, new imbalances have emerged, most notably between costal Corsica, which attracts manpower and economic activity to the detriment of the interior, which is stagnating and whose inhabitants are, more and more, the elderly.
