Abstract

[eng] Existence of French Regions -The analysis of commuting patterns clearly shows the relations of interdépendance that exists between homes and places of work. The grouping of the geographical units in which such a relationship exists forms zones of exchange, seemingly rudimentary at first, but which soon tend to aggregate into vaster zones, and eventually are in an undifferentiated relationship with all the others. Thus, one obtains a break-down of the national territory into areas each one of which displays a certain economic unity. This approach, when applied to alternating migrations from one administrative district to another, reveals the existence of a heterogeneous national space, composed of zones ranging in size from a department to much larger areas comprising three or four regions. At the same time, it reveals that France is dotted with innumerable small zones in which such an exchange does not exist. This sort of break-down is extremely different from the administrative divisions into regions. However, it primarily shows that, whatever the sort of economic action envisaged, there is no single standardized geographic norm on which it can be based.
