Abstract

[eng] The end of old cars - This article is the third and last part of a study on automobiles. The first two parts were published at the end of 1977 in Economie et statistique. This third part is devoted to the study of the life of cars and the eventual vehicle registration for new cars between 1980 and 1985. Over the past fifteen years, the lifetime of cars slowly decreased. At present, it is fixed at about ten years: France has a more unusual behaviour as a Nation in this regard than does Sweden or West Germany. This fact, however, is not without effect on the sales volume of new cars. According to the hypothesis used in the study, sales of new cars could increase by one third from the now until 1985, just as they could remain at their present level.
