Abstract

[eng] Fertility and female work activity - Fertility and female work activity are closely linked. The latter, especially, decreases with the amount of work required by the family. Yet, between 1968 and 1975, the rate of activity of mothers with fewer than three children or with children of school age has considerably increased. In almost all of the socio-professional «milieux », the fertility of working women is less than that of non-working women. Differences are slight only in groups where the woman works close to her home. In fact, the type of work that a woman does conditions directly the importance of the number of children she has. It is strong for those women who do not work or who work in agriculture; it is median for women working as white collar workers of self-employed; it is weakest for manual workers and employees. Work is often interupted after a birth, especially when the children are grouped together, or when the mother works at a non-qualified job. It seems that very young women value highly, by choice or by necessity, either maternity (family insertion) or work (social insertion). As a result, the Initial orientation of a woman becomes difficult to reverse whether as a result of new births or because she needs to keep her job.
