[eng] The recent evolution of social mobility - Social mobility varies according to the different social classes. It reaches its maximum in the medium social status groups and is much lower among farmers or high categories. If the profession of the head of the family has a more or less attractive influence upon the son's choice in the matter of profession, the level of culture of the social class, the aspirations kept alive by the family, the schooling, play also an important part. The mobility flow between social and professional classes explain, in the first instance, urbanization and rural exodus observed during the recent ten-year periods; finally, the professional status is an important item of the social and cultural patrimony, as things happen as if not only an economic and cultural capital were conveyed but also determined living conditions. Social mobility increase, observed during the last twenty years is, apparently, due essentially to alterations effected in the social and professional structure of economically active populations rather than to new chances of succeeding among the various social groups; likewise, the slight differences observed between France and Federal Republic of Germany are ascribed to differences in the level of industrial development. The general fluctuation conceals, in France, a greater mobility with regard to young generations (attributable to schooling development) and an increasing rigidity for elder generations.
