Abstract

[eng] The structure of company balance sheets by Jean-Paul LE ROY and Catherine KELLER . Since 1967, the documents supplied to the Directorate-General of Taxation by industrial and commercial enterprises have made it possible to compile accouting statistics. The study has been made on the basis of operating accounts, profit and loss accounts, and balance sheets, treated in the form of standard accounts; it has been confined to companies, that is to say, to about 200,000 units. . The structure of company balance sheets is analysed after the balance sheet items have been classified under a few main headings; four headings for assets and three headings for liabilities. The structure of assets has been compared with the ratio of each component of assets to value added. The structure of liabilities is analysed, first, in relation to assets, by applying the concept of working capital, and, secondly, in itself, in order to study the level of indebtedness. If companies are ranked by size (five turnover brackets) there in found to be an appreciable variation in the pattern of the balance sheet according to size, owing to the fact that some balance sheet items are directly linked with the level of turnover, while others reflect the increase in capital-intensity with increasing size. The role of the biggest firms as financial intermediaries comes out very clearly. . In a second phase, when the companies are classified by National Accounts sectors, the structure of the balance sheets often fails to reflect the nature of the activity; there is found to be a faulty distribution of permanent capital in relation to fixed assets. The indebtedness of companies varies considerably from one sector to another; the differences between the degree of indebtedness and the capacity to repay are often explained by the level of return on capital.
