Abstract

[eng] The population of Paris area has more than trebled in the last century, reaching 9,250,000 compared with 2.800,000 in 1861. This growth has been possible only because of a constant and substantial flow of migration. Since 1962, however, increasingly numerous departures to the Provinces are beginning to counterbalance the inverse movement from the regions to Paris. . The flow of migration and the special functions of the capital mean that the Paris Region has special demographic characteristics of its own; fewer children, more adults, fewer elderly people; a proportionnally high number of women at work and a high proportion of supervisory and executive grades. This structure is directly linked with the composition of the migratory flows; the attraction of Paris for the Provinces is particularly strong among young people, especially for school and university reasons. The attraction of the Provinces over Paris is appreciable at all ages. Departures from Paris reach their maximum at the time of retreat. . The industrial sector makes a strong appeal to internal immigration, though its importance has declined; the predominant sector is now administration and the public service. The Paris Region is by far the main destination for foreign immigrants into France. They are mostly operatives, especially in building and public works.
