Abstract

[eng] A special processing of the 1963 Industrial Census has made it possible to study the importance, in the different regions, of multi-regional industrial enterprises — i.e. enterprises with establishments in at least two régions — and the relations existing between the location of head offices and their establishments. . Multi-regional enterprises employ 41 % of the industrial work force. The establishments belonging to these enterprises are mainly located in the Northern and Eastern regions of France. . The influence of the Paris Region far outweighs the rest; multi-regional enterprises with their head office in the Paris Region have a work force of 1,855,000 of whom 1,146,000 are employed in establishments in the Provinces. Conversely, the enterprises in most the Provincial regions have establishments in the Paris Region, but these establishments employ only 30,000 wage- earners. . Disregarding the Paris Region, whose pre-eminence is explained by the special role of the capital as a business centre, a few regions control, in establishments outside the region, more wage- earners than are controlled on their territory by head offices in other regions. They are the Rhone-Alps, Alsace, Lorraine, the Nord, and, to a lesser extent Franche-Comté and Auvergne. . The influence of these regions generally extends to the adjoining regions, but the influence of the Rhone-Alps region extends throughout the South of France and to certain regions of the North and East.
