Abstract

[eng] Between 1954 and 1962, in spite of substantial immigration, the labourforcein France remained stable at a level comparable to that which it had already reached at the beginning of the century. From 1962 to 1968, on the contrary, under the influence of the post-war bulge, the work force increased by 1 190 000. Such a rapid growth is unprecedented. . En 1968, the population was made up of 15 % peasants, 11 % sole proprietors, and 74 % non-agricultural wage and salary earners. Operatives amount to 38 % of the work force, clerical staff 15 % and supervisory grades 10 %. Senior executives represent 4.1 %, compared with 2.2 % in 1954. . The recent Census thus discloses profound changes in the social pattern in France. But it may also be noted that recent employment difficulties have checked the progressive fall in small traders and craftsmen. . The author calls attention to a tendency towards upgrading. The proportion of more highly skilled categories is tending to increase. This feature is even more marked among women, who constitute 61 % of clerical staff and 19 % of the liberal professions and senior executives.
