Abstract

[eng] In 1964 the trend of fertility, which had been showing a slightly upward tendency for several years, marked a sharp downturn. . In four years the cumulative effect of the new factor influencing this evolution resulted in a fall in the number of births, compared with the previous trend, of 130,000 in 1968 and 340,000 for the period 1965-1968.. All categories of population are affected by this fall; all generations, both younger and older, are marrying less and having fewer children, and all families, whatever size they have reached, are expanding more slowly. . The authors seek to analyse the components of this evolution, in default of identifying its causes. . They place it in relation to the trend of fertility in France for the last century, and then in relation to similar trends in the Western world.
