Abstract

The paper aims to identify the main thematic areas of contemporary ecophenomenological research. It will be argued that ecophenomenology primarily employs methodological approaches that either problematise the objective, instrumental-scientific approach to the world and/or question the insularity of the knowing subject. It will then be shown that contemporary ecophenomenology takes its inspiration from the work of Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Levinas and, following this, four key themes of ecophenomenological research will be identified, namely Husserl's notion of the life-world, Heidegger's thematization of technology and earthly dwelling, Merleau-Ponty's problematisation of corporeality, and Levinas's ethics and the related concept of the face of nature.
