Abstract

The articles published in «La Stampa» by Attilio Cabiati are of great importance, both for their number and for their subjects. He expressed his opinion on every and each main topic of Italian economic life in the first half of twenties, often punchy, always clearly. Cabiati, in a special way, kept a close eye on Italian monetary problems, warmly supporting a quick return to gold standard. However, he was quite skeptical on the choice of the famous ‘quota 90’ (90 liras = 1 pound), in full contrast with Mussolini’s view. As a consequence, he was forced to stop his collaboration with «La Stampa», as he had been many times previously in sharp contrast with the Fascist propaganda, debunking the myth of ‘budget recovery’ and openly charging regime-controlled Trade Unions with betrayal of working class interests
