Abstract

Luigi Einaudi was always an opponent of the ‘myth’, viewed as an expression of orthodoxy and dogma in economic reasoning. However, this intellectual attitude is often interpreted as contradictory to his fame of laissez-faire economist, that would explain his acceptance of the principle of balanced budget and his misunderstanding of the Keynesian revolution. In this paper this interpretation is discussed in the light of Einaudi’s economic methodology, arguing that Einaudi considered the balanced budget as another ‘myth’, another questionable economic dogma.
