Mercados, precios y distribución: porqué Marshall estaba en lo correcto con respecto a Ricardo

Abstract

En este artículo me propongo demostrar la validez de la defensa de Ricardo que hizo Alfred Marshall, contra la reacción marginalista de la década de 1870. Desde mi punto de vista, Marshall estaba por completo en lo correcto en la defensa que realizó, pero tal vez no llego lo suficientemente lejos. Esto, ya que Marshall se mantuvo demasiado al interior de un marco de equilibrio parcial, mientras que la economía de Ricardo refleja preeminentemente el equilibrio general. Al hacer la defensa intento poner de relieve el rol de los precios en la trasmisión de información sobre el mercado, la noción de los costos alternativos, el principio de maximizacion de retornos netos y la interacción de bienes y servicios en el mercado; en breve, la teoría de la coordinacion de actividades economicas descentralizadas.
