Inflación, y retroalimentación inflacionaria

Abstract

El ensayo que sigue fue escrito originalmente como documento a una reu- nión de cientfficos sociales que trataba la cuestión de la inflación, en Nueva York, marzo de 1980. Lo que motivó la redacción de este ensayo fue la per- sistencia impresionante en las conferencias de ciertos enfoques “ortodoxos” de la inflación, en particular entre los economistas participantes. Especialmente, persistían los enfoques tipo “estittica comparativa” a la inflación, y, relacionada a ésta, persistían las tentativas de clasificar los casos de inflación en tipos “de- manda” y “costos”. No hay necesidad de negar aquí que los análisis estático- comparativos de la inflación pueden ser útiles. Sm embargo, es la convicCion .del autor que la ciencia económica no puede avanzar mucho más en el entendimien- to genuino de la inflación a menos que se tome más cabalmente en cuenta su rd- turaleza dinámica. La tesis del ensayo que sigue es que una característica esencial -tal vez la más importante- de la naturaleza dinamica de la inflación es su pro- ceso de “retroalimentación”: la inflacibn que ocurre en un período de tiempo da origen a presiones inflacionarias en períodos subsecuentes.
